2. Hosting on GitHub Pages

This site is hosted by GitHub, Inc., 88 Colin P. Kelly Jr. Street, San Francisco, CA 94107, USA, on its GitHub Pages service. When you open a page, GitHub's servers receive what your browser sends with every request: your IP address, browser type and version, operating system, the page requested, date and time of the request and the referring page. GitHub logs the IP address of every visitor for security purposes. I have no access to those logs and no influence on them. Details are inGitHub's privacy statement.

GitHub, Inc. is certified under the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework, so the transfer to the USA rests on the adequacy decision of the European Commission (Art. 45 GDPR). The legal basis for hosting the site this way is my legitimate interest in a reliably and securely delivered website (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR).

3. The intro photo from Unsplash

The photo behind the intro section is loaded from images.unsplash.com, a service of Unsplash, Inc., Montreal, Canada. When your browser fetches it, Unsplash receives your IP address and the usual request data. Canada is covered by an adequacy decision of the European Commission (Art. 45 GDPR). The legal basis is my legitimate interest in a pleasantly designed site (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR). Details are inUnsplash's privacy policy.

4. View counter

On every page view, a small script sends the path of the page to my own counter service at custos.m1well.com, which runs on a server in Germany. The counter stores only the path and the time of the request: no cookie, no identifier, no IP address, no user agent. Single views can therefore not be linked to a visit or to a person; what remains is a total per page. The legal basis is my legitimate interest in knowing which content is read at all (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR).

5. Cookies, browser storage and embedded content

This site sets no cookies and does not analyse your behaviour. If you use the light/dark toggle in the header, your choice is saved in your browser's local storage under the key mw-theme, so the site opens in the same theme next time. That value stays on your device and is never sent anywhere. Storing it is strictly necessary for the function you asked for (Section 25(2) no. 2 TDDDG), so no consent is needed and there is no cookie banner.

Fonts, icons, stylesheets and scripts are served from this site itself. There are no tag managers, no analytics and no social media plugins.

The links to LinkedIn, Xing, GitHub, daily.dev, dev.to and to the projects listed here are ordinary links. Your browser only connects to those sites once you click, and their privacy policies apply from there.

6. Contact by e-mail

If you write me an e-mail, your message and the personal data it contains, typically your name, your e-mail address and your request, are stored and processed for the purpose of handling it. I do not pass this data on without your consent.

The legal basis is Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR if your request relates to a contract or its initiation. In all other cases it is my legitimate interest in handling the requests addressed to me (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR). Your message stays with me until you ask me to delete it or the purpose of storing it no longer applies. Statutory retention periods remain unaffected.

7. Your rights

You have the right to obtain, free of charge, information about the personal data I hold about you, its origin, its recipients and the purpose of the processing (Art. 15 GDPR), and the right to rectification (Art. 16 GDPR) and erasure (Art. 17 GDPR). You can demand that processing be restricted (Art. 18 GDPR) and have the right to data portability (Art. 20 GDPR). Consent you have given can be withdrawn at any time with effect for the future.

Right to object: Where your data is processed on the basis of Art. 6(1)(e) or (f) GDPR, you have the right to object to that processing at any time, on grounds relating to your particular situation (Art. 21 GDPR).

You also have the right to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority, in particular in the member state of your habitual residence, your place of work or the place of the alleged infringement. The authority responsible for me is the Landesbeauftragte für den Datenschutz und die Informationsfreiheit Baden-Württemberg.

8. Encryption

This site is delivered over TLS only. You can tell by the https:// at the start of the address bar and the lock symbol next to it. Data you send to me cannot be read by third parties on the way.

9. Objection to unsolicited advertising

I object to the use of the contact details published in the legal notice for sending advertising or information material that was not expressly requested. I reserve the right to take legal action in the event of unsolicited advertising, for instance spam e-mails.
